A Major Originator & Trader of Rice
Domestic Capabilities
Our 10,000-hectare, fully mechanised, large-scale rice farm in Nasarawa State in Nigeria supplies growing domestic demand, while supporting economic and agricultural development opportunities for local farmers. Our farm has an integrated rice mill with a processing capacity of 70,000 tonnes, and acts both as a centre for improving productivity and as a vocational training hub for thousands of smallholders from nearby communities.
We’re focused on building sustainable production, which can scale to feed the growing population and improve livelihoods and farming practices.
We work with farmers, governments, customers and civil society partners to improve sustainability across rice supply chains.
Rice cultivation is a leading contributor to climate change, emitting 10% of all global man-made methane emissions and is a significant consumer of water, while being a key source of nutrition and income for millions of small-scale farmers.
Rice Sustainability
Sustainable Rice Platform
As a founding member of the Sustainable Rice Platform (SRP), we’re working to promote and implement more holistic standards for water and land use, labour standards, GHG emissions and the reduction of chemical inputs. We’ve partnered with the German development agency (GIZ), UN environment (UNEP) and the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) to help define internationally accepted, scientific solutions to the climate impacts of rice agriculture.
Sustainable Rice Production
Our partnerships with national governmental and international organisations such as GIZ, the Thai Rice Department and the NAMA facility, enable us to implement projects that verify solutions on the ground, before scaling up solutions. Our outgrowers’ project in Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand, has produced the world’s first sustainable rice, fully verified by a third-party.
Collaboration with Communities
To make a tangible impact on livelihoods, we’re seeking to improve farming communities by investing in public goods, improving the reach of our rice farm vocational training centre, distributing better inputs, and developing farming communities in Nigeria.
